I've gained 20 lbs since the start of this pregnancy. That feels like too much.
Sammy has been moving like crazy the past couple of weeks. Patrick can wake him up by putting his hand on my stomach and pushing gently. If I rest my laptop there or lean on the sink doing dishes, he goes crazy.
My sides are terribly sore, it feels like I've been doing sit-ups for hours. My ribs are actually spreading, Patrick can feel them when he puts his hands around me (he didn't believe me, so I proved it!). This baby is 91st percentile currently, and I'm certainly not 91st percentile myself, though Patrick and I were both AT LEAST that at birth. |

I think the baby did two complete cartwheels last Thursday, which was the first time I was sure it was him. Since then he's been moving like CRAZY.
Monday we found out the gender (hence the use of pronouns above). I was right :). Samuel Patrick is healthy and slightly larger than average (surprise, surprise). He wiggled during the entire ultrasound, which probably had something to do with the can of pineapple juice I drank a half hour before the appointment. His feet are 2.85 and 3 cms long, which seems incredibly large to me!
In house news, they found pillar post bugs, which is expected in a 200 year old house, and choleriform |

| I would like another three day weekend |
[Oct. 15th, 2006|09:26 am] |
This is my first two day weekend in three weeks....its going to kill me.
Last weekend was good. I got to see my new nephew (www.euphfamily.blogspot.com) and then go apple-poaching on Monday.
This weekend has also been good. Friday night I had a lay on the couch and have brownies a la mode for dinner night. Yesterday, Patrick and I went to a craft fair in Pittsfield, where we got to see Kate and we got a Christmast present for Patrick's Mom. Then, we went to see "Man of the Year," which was really good, even if it made Patrick all angsty.
Today, I'm going into the lab - but hopefully I'll be out by 12:30. |

I HAVE A JOB INTERVIEW!!!!!!! |

[Jun. 22nd, 2006|08:07 pm] |
For some reason, my body does not like to build calluses. While I am used to this causing problems with all forms of shoes, my hands have been suffering recently.
A couple of weeks ago, I was cutting needles at work (don't ask why). I've done this millions of times. Of course, this caused my fingers to blister terribly.
Today, I did nothing more than wear latex gloves for eight hours. And I did change them! Around three o'clock, I got really annoyed that one of my gloves had a large piece of latex stuck on the inside. It hurt my thumb as it moved around in there. When I took my gloves off, I realized that was a piece of SKIN, not loose latex. The reason my thumb hurt was not due to poorly built gloves. It was because my skin was tearing itself off!
When I came home, I noticed a series of more minor rips along the backs of my hands...this is not so unusual. But a thumb? The skin of my thumb, which I would expect to be stronger than the rest of the skin on my hands, ripped off as a result of the slight friction between it and latex.
I want man hands! |

| New Macs! |
[May. 16th, 2006|07:44 pm] |
Patrick recently told me that my computer is making noises that are Very Scary and Dangerous. But I refused to buy a new computer because no new Macs have come out and last time I bought a computer the new PowerBooks were out eight days after (a day or two past the limit that I could have returned mine for the new). This, obviously, infuriated me because I wanted a shiny new brushed aluminum PowerBook (though I love that mine is made of airplanes) with a back-lit keyboard. So, I've been waiting for a new release to buy a computer.
They did it today! Instead of IBooks, they now have "MacBooks" and instead of PowerBooks they have "MacBook Pros." I think I'm going for the lower-end this time, and for smaller (Look! The smallest is now widescreen! Yay!), so I'm going to get a MacBook.
But I'm kind of falling for they hype. I want the nice black one, even though I know they only do it to tack a couple hundred dollars on to the price. I'm at a loss. Its probably good that they don't have any in-stock (Patrick insists that I get more something or the other, which isn't possible in-store) or I would have dropped the cash for a more expensive one today. Now I get to wrangle with the decision. (But the black one actually IS better).
Check them out: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/0.RSLID?mco=69469017&nclm=MacBook
Student discount actually knocks a bit of the price, but not much. Argh, I have to wait 5-7 days! |

Patrick tells me I need a hobby, but all of his suggestions involve too much physical activity. I admit I'm lazy and that the running around I do at work all day exhausts me too much for anything more to be entertaining. |

| Studying for Cell Bio |
[Dec. 17th, 2005|01:08 pm] |
"MAP-kinase must be phosphorylated to be fully activated. This is done through actions of MAP-kinase-kinase. MAP- kinase-kinase is itself activated by phosphorylation catalyzed by the first kinase in the three component module, MAP-kinase-kinase-kinase" (The Cell, pg. 878)
"All cytokine receptors, however, are associated with one or more Jaks. There are four known Jaks - Jak1, Jak2, Jak3, and Tyk2." (The Cell, pg. 884).
And the protein responsible for programmed cell death is BAD. Of course, this acronym is not defined in my text. |

| Meeting my teacher! |
[Dec. 16th, 2005|06:04 pm] |
So, I met my cooperating teacher for the first time yesterday, and then my partner and I sat in on one of her classes. I'm going to be working in an 8th grade classroom at Bethlehem Middle School. I'm a little scared, considering physics and chemistry aren't my area of expertise, and I never actually took 8th grade science.
Anyway, when we first meet the teacher, she starts explaining her philosophy on teaching. No textbooks, few multiple choice questions, etc. Well, textboks are used as ramps, and for the gravity unit. The point is that its a highly "constructivist" environment. Their homework assignment for the night before was to describe how a lava lamp worked in terms of density and particle motion. She also told us that she had the kids break into groups to come up with their own theory of particle motion, which they had to defend to the class. I'm really afraid these kids may be more advanced than I am!
The kids seemed great, too. One kid asked a crazy question, and the teacher asked him who taught him something so crazy. He replied, "my student teacher." The kid in front of us turned around, grinned, and said "good luck!"
I'm going to have trouble with the fact that they're allowed so much talking/moving freedom, though. I know that sounds awful of me, and it kind of is, but its going to be really hard for me to deal with all that distracting behavior. I was also little terrified when I learned that she only uses very broad lesson plans, although I know thats good. It just seems like I'm going to have a lot of trouble, give my lack of experience. |

From firynze </span>who got it from someone else
I made a comment to a friend today about the things that get
overlooked. What brings you delight in your day? Not the expected --
don't say family or your lover or your career or writing. Tell me about
demitasse spoons. Tell me about air fresheners.
Here's my list: 1. Not just books (which I adore), but the pages of all kinds of books! Thin, crinkly, soft pages; thick and coarse pages; dusty, musty pages in old books! I love how they give different books different personalities 2. When I drop dimes. Other coins fall dully with a metallic cling, but dimes tinkle and bounce. Sometimes I drop them on purpose just so I can hear them, and then I leave them for someone else to find. 3. Finding Science in the mailbox. Not so much for the articles, but I love the covers. I have to be the first to grab it so I can figure out what the picture is showing before Patrick spoils it for me. 4. Similarly, I love my new SFN calendar. Mmmmm, beautiful pictures of dendrites and opossum brains. 5. Office supplies. Specifically, I love the little sticky page markers, and I love the red leatherette holder Emily gave me to store them. 6. Right now...wrapping Christmas presents! I like picking pretty paper and making sure its folded neatly and crisply. Its amazing I love wrapping this much when I was forced to spend whole Christmas Eves wrapping for my brothers. I suppose this is my rebellion - no more throwing toys into the paper and messily wrapping tape around it just so it can be torn off and thrown across the room! My wrapping is neat and clean!
What a good idea!

Menage a trois! Ligand seeks two receptors into binding and mutual phosphorylation. Let's get together and transduce some signals.
Some dates have called me a promotor. Others have referred to me as a real operator. Personally, I think I'm just a cute piece of DNA who is still looking for that special transcription factor to help me unwind.
Highly sensitive, orally active small molecule seeks stable well-structured receptor who knows size isn't everything.
There must be a rational way to meet a date! I'm tired of hanging out in those molecular diversity bars, hoping to randomly bump into the right peptide. I want a molecule that will fit right into my active site and really turn me on. I'll send you my crystal structure if you send me yours!
Gene therapy graduate. After years of producing nothing but gibberish, I've shed my exons and am ready to express my introns. All I need is a cute vector to introduce me to the right host.
My RNA, I'm sorry I misread your UAAUAAUAA and inserted three tyrosines when you repeatedly asked me to stop. Something got lost in the translation. Please forgive me.
